Did you know this about Opatija?

Opatija, the former leading tourist destination of Austria-Hungary, was not just a place to relax. Already in 1885, a year after the first hotel was opened, it was host to the first Congress of Balneotherapy. It was discussed whether Opatija should be a summer resort or a health resort. Shortly after that, in 1889, Opatija was proclaimed as the first health-sea resort on the Adriatic, and in 1908, it was host to the 4th International Congress of Thalassotherapy.
