The city of Opatija, situated on the Adriatic Coast, is one of the most beautiful tourism destinations in Croatia, with a rich history of being an elite destination for European nobles and aristocracy since the nineteenth century. Today, Opatija is known as a destination which combines tradition with modern luxury, which dazzles visitors from all over the world.
Due to the mild climate with moderate winters and warm summers, it is an attractive destination during the entire year. Several beautiful beaches with crystal clear sea extend in Opatija, offering perfect spots for refreshment and relaxation. However, tourists don’t visit this city just because of the beaches. There are beautiful parks and gardens hidden here, where you can experience a unique connection to nature and escape from the bustling of the city.
Opatija, the former leading tourist destination of Austria-Hungary, was not just a place to relax. Already in 1885, a year after the first hotel was opened, it was host to the first Congress of Balneotherapy. It was discussed whether Opatija should be a summer resort or a health resort. Shortly after that, in 1889, Opatija was proclaimed as the first health-sea resort on the Adriatic, and in 1908, it was host to the 4th International Congress of Thalassotherapy.
